Rob Taylor

Director of Engineering, Teamline

I wound up becoming a programmer after realizing that teaching myself C on a Monday was more enjoyable than the rest of my physics PhD – so I decided to try my luck at giving my CV to a recruiter (Daniel Bardsley, who funnily enough now also works at StarLeaf!).

Nick Moss

Director of Engineering, Croxley

Three years at UCL and one year at a "Telecommunications Institute" in the North West of France set me up for a career that has inadvertantly covered all layers of computer networking.

Graduating from the University of Waikato, New Zealand with a PHD in Computer Science, Sam found that industry fit him better than academia. Via roles in the USA and UK, he found his way to being part of the founding Engineering team at StarLeaf in 2009.

I started my career at StarLeaf in Cambridge – where for one glorious week I made an Asteroids clone in Python. Happily, I then transferred to the Watford office, where I started doing something actually useful – developing a real-time stats debug interface for the servers that host our video conferencing. One of the great things about being a grad software engineer at StarLeaf was getting a ton of time from the more experienced members – I don’t think I’ve ever learnt so much so quickly! After that, I developed the StarLeaf WebRTC client – allowing video calls from the browser – which was a great experience, as I got to work across a wide range of systems and learn a ton of new things, from Typescript, to NGINX, to some sweet C++ template meta-programming.

After 4 years of that though, I wanted a return to Cambridge’s good weather – so I came over to join the Teamline team, in their shiny new central Cambridge offices - where I am now Head of Engineering. I’m now trying to juggle recruiting new engineers (that means you!) and developing Teamline’s Azure-hosted meeting room management platform.

When I’m not working, I spend my time playing 12-hour board games, cycling up Yorkshire hills, and similar forms of mild self-torture.

By pure chance, I started at the lowest level, getting to grips with some hairy problems in the physical layer devices used to make a LAN connections. From there I moved up into the world of ASIC design, working on custom silicon for network adapters and switches. As that area became commoditised, I moved further up the stack, writing software for network intrusion detection and security devices for wireless networks and finally looking at hardware assisted deep content inspection at the application layer. Looking for a new challenge and thanks to a few calls from some of the people I'd worked with straight out of University, I arrived in a large empty office in the centre of Rickmansworth in May 2009. There were three of us and my first day involved a trip to Ikea to buy a desk. The remit was wide open and for the first time I was in a pure software role, but despite all that, a product plan came together within a few months and we started to grow a team. The rest as they say, is history, but I'm happy to say that even in a company twenty times the size of that original little group, we haven't lost the sense of innovation, team work and rapid progress that makes StarLeaf such a great place to work.
